A note on the process of printmaking

In 1996 I made this series of photographs based on the numerology of the Tarot and Kabbalah. I took 22 slides, negatives into the laboratory and made a list of all possible variations of numbers on the enlarger and printer. Then I made a calculation of how can these two separate systems can be translated in terms of numbers /i.e. the numerology of the Tarot and the technical numbers./ After this I made a divination with my pack of Tarot-cards for the entire process and for each separate image.

I decided to have another divination for the first part of the process, which meant that I had to know how many different stages has to be separated in the work. As it turned out there were three types of imagery ; the first nine prints, based on the idea of using one slide as a negative and changing the colors, the number of superimpositions, even the side of paper according to the particular numbers that I've got from the divinations. The second part consists of three photographs and based on the idea of using different slides, negatives for each image, but the combination and the number of negatives were limited by the divination. The last part was a combination of every pictorial-numerological relationship of the images, I used all the 22 original “negatives”.

When the prints were ready I opened up the kabbalistic dictionary of Aleister Crowley and after counting the numbers for each image I made a poetical interpretation of the words which has the same value as the photograph.
