Tibor Szemző: Directed Chance (1987) (5:59)

Tibor Szemző made a video script for his performance: he marked a planned route on a map of Budapest, which he then drove along in his car to record on video the accidental steering wheel movements of the controlled car and the sounds of the city. This recording provided the basis for the sound-generation method of Galántai’s sculpture titled Directed Chance.

By simultaneously moving the steering wheels of the car and the statue a dialogue took place between the street noise in the video and the metallic sound of the statue. The repeated constrast between the dramatic rigour of control and the spontaneous humour of unanticipated chance reached a barely tolerable degree by the end of the performance.
