Vito ACCONCI (USA) Zone, 30-minute performance
Eisner
and Lubin Auditorium, New York University. April 9, 1971.
An area ten feet square marked off with masking tape. One 500-watt
bulb lights the area; the rest of the auditorium is dark. An activity
for one cat, one male performer.
1. The cat functions as a center point.
2. I walk around the cat, forming the periphery of a circle that encloses
the cat.
3. When the cat moves, and tries to break away, I shift my circular
movement: my goal is to keep the cat enclosed within the circle.
-Performance as point (the performance is a matter of "keeping
to the point," preventing the cat from getting away from the
point).
-The goal of the performance is to create a still point (unmoving
cat): lull: charmed circle: performance as hypnosis.
