Reality
is not made up of things and processes,
neither of parts and wholes,
but of whole-parts, called holons.
Holons develop holarchically.
Holarchy is a more accurate word for hierarchy,
but with the overtone of autocracy taken out of it.
The basic requirement
of the operation of holons is a developed communication skill,
and the ability to quickly access situations and give flexible responses to
constantly changing external circumstances.
A holon is able to act as a whole, and – being a part – it is able to take part in the operation of the holon of which it is a part.
These are the horizontal abilities of a holon.
The vertical abilities of a holon are
those of disintegration and self-surpassing.
A holon is able to reach a lower level (disintegration)
and a higher level (self-surpassing).
These abilities provide the engine of evolution.
It is crucial
that holons operating in a given system
should be controlled by fixed rules and flexible strategies.
The mind
as a holonic system is an autonomous unit,
while it is also part of a holonic production system:
it is both a product and a production unit.
Holarchisation
is the process of creating ever greater wholes and
the integration of the previous wholes.
