János Kalmár: Vertical Fragility (Reök palace), 2017

János Kalmár (Budapest, 1952)

He turned his back on time and space; his figures do not distinctly depict men or women but rather the generally human.

While drawing on the formal tradition of African and archaic sculpture, Kalmár is also inspired by the art of the Far East and the influence of both western and oriental styles is manifest in his works.

Whenever possible, he minimises artistic expression to the extreme and only indicates space with the surfaces of his sculptures.

His sign-like figures reflect rather than break up the stillness of the space created around them.
