J’ai connu Júlia Klaniczay grâce à Artpool. Ces archives uniques d’œuvres d’art de la seconde moitié du XXe siècle ont été pour moi une surprise extraordinaire et positive. Je me souviens de ma première visite : un grand appartement de six pièces aux murs hauts, situé au centre de Budapest, était rempli d’étagères pleines de documents systématiquement triés. Au milieu de la plus grande pièce se trouvait une immense table à laquelle des jeunes gens étudiaient tranquillement. Dans une autre, latérale, un homme mystérieux était assis, absorbé par son travail. C’était György Galántai lui-même, l’organisateur qui a rendu possible la légendaire rencontre entre artistes et critiques visuels hongrois, tchèques et slovaques à Balatonboglár en 1973. Il a utilisé son atelier d’été pour l’occasion, ayant fait entrer l’événement et l’endroit dans l’histoire. Depuis lors et jusqu’à nos jours, György Galántai travaille au service de l’idée de préserver la mémoire des événements de la scène artistique alternative hongroise. Grâce à l’activité de ses protagonistes, celle-ci n’est pas restée enfermée sur le territoire national ; bien au contraire, les attitudes artistiques alternatives et l’ouverture de ses membres ont créé un réseau mondial bien avant l’invention d’Internet. Les expositions de mail art, organisées sans relâche par Artpool, ont largement contribué à sa consolidation.
Derrière tous, György Galántai se tenait fermement. Mais à ces côtés, pendant toutes ces décennies, Júlia Klaniczay a travaillé avec dévouement. Cette grande dame, exceptionnellement cultivée et intelligente, avec sa maîtrise des langues étrangères et ses manières élégantes, aurait certainement pu utiliser ses compétences à n’importe quelle position sociale représentative. La grandeur de son caractère s’est cependant démontrée par son choix de vie : celui de rester auprès de György Galántai, d’être le soutien de son rêve réalisé, d’être de soutien d’Artpool.
Des décennies se sont écoulées depuis ma première visite à Artpool. Au cours de ces années, la situation sociale et les conditions des activités du groupe ont connu des changements. Il n’a pas toujours été facile de préserver son indépendance et d’assurer en même temps son existence. György Galántai et Júlia Klaniczay ont réussi à surmonter de nombreuses vicissitudes avec une immense bravoure, sans se plaindre. Je suis même convaincue que sans Júlia, ils n’y seraient pas parvenus. Grâce à elle, Artpool reste toujours un acteur incontournable de l’histoire de l’art.
Il est formidable que dans une époque pleine de changements et de contradictions, Júlia ait pu rester elle-même. Toujours humble, posée, prête à aider tous ceux qui en ont besoins, débutants ou experts. Je suis reconnaissante de pouvoir l’appeler mon amie. Et j’espère ne pas énoncer une contradiction en disant qu’à mes yeux, elle est aussi une grande dame pleine de noblesse. Je suis heureuse de me joindre au cercle d’amis qui lui souhaitent un joyeux anniversaire et d’exprimer tous mes vœux de bonheur à l’occasion de son jubilée.

To Julia
Júlia Klaniczay came into my life through Artpool. This unique archive of works from the second half of the 20th-century was an extraordinary and delightful surprise for me. I still remember my first visit there: a large flat with a tall ceiling in central Budapest, full of shelves with systematically organised documents. Young people were studying quietly by a huge table in the middle of the biggest room. In another, on the side, a mysterious man was sitting, immersed in his work. It was György Galántai himself, who organised the legendary meeting of Hungarian, Czech and Slovak artists in 1973 in Balatonboglár. He used his summer workshop for this event, which, along with the place, is now recorded in the annals of history. Since then, to this day, György Galántai has been working hard to preserve the events of the Hungarian alternative art scene. Thanks to the efforts of ’the protagonists’, this scene was not limited to Hungary; moreover, the alternative attitude to art and openness of its members had created a worldwide network long before the invention of the internet, with the mail art exhibitions, tirelessly organised by Artpool, significantly contributing to its consolidation.
Behind all this was the solid commitment of György Galántai, with Júlia Klaniczay working during all these decades by his side, with full dedication. This exceptionally educated and intelligent, elegant and multi-lingual lady would have certainly made a success of herself in any representative social position, but the greatness of her personality was manifest in the ultimate decision of her life to stay by György Galántai’s side and support him in pursuing his dream come true: Artpool.
Decades have passed since my first visit in Artpool. During these years, the social standing and operational circumstances of the [Artpool] team have changed. It was not always easy to preserve their independence and ensure their continued existence. György Galántai and Júlia Klaniczay lived through many vicissitudes, fighting bravely, heroically and without complaining. What is more, I am convinced that without Júlia they would not have succeeded. It is thanks to her that Artpool remains a crucial player in art history.
It is wonderful that in a time so full of change and contradiction, Júlia was able to stay true to herself. She has been ever humble, balanced and ready to help anyone who needs it, be it a beginner or an expert. I am grateful that I can call her my friend. And I hope that I will not contradict myself when I say that, for me, she is a genuine lady, full of noble gentleness. I am gladly joining her circle of friends in wishing her a happy birthday and my best wishes on her jubilee year.
