SOUNDSCAPES
As a result of the changes that took place during the 20th century in regard to thinking about music and sound; new theories and concepts emerged as a consequence of the insufficiency of earlier theories, among others.
Acoustic communication, acoustic ecology and ecological sound art are relatively new areas, linked to one another and in mutual interaction. Their starting point is the soundscape.
Being part of a soundscape, the listener, is not the subject of passive energy reception but belongs to a dynamic system, in which information is being exchanged. Cause and effect relations, circumstances, conditions and mutual effects are not important from the perspective of the energy transfer. The system of acoustic communication, however, has an essential element: context.
The essence is the difference between hearing and listening.
The final stop of the linear sound interpretation model is hearing, while that of the communication model is listening.
