GYÖRGY GALÁNTAI: THE BURDEN OF REMEBRANCE

performative installation with audience participation

The image-text combination of the installation - enhanced by sound - concentrates on the behavioral art that determined the events of the chapel studio 50 years ago, from a strictly site-specific perspective.

The audience is the most important articulator of the development of this seven-hour random, intermediate event. The active visitor can leave with the experience of having experienced the "burden of remembrance" as an experience of memory in the context of space and time.

"The Burden of Remembrance" is at the same time the closing project of the Boglár 50 events and presentations in 2023, commemorating the history and official liquidation of György Galántai's Chapel Studio in Balatonboglár 50 years ago

Performative archives: Balatonboglár 1970-73

Between 1970 and 1973, György Galántai's Chapel Studio in Balatonboglár was a space for progressive artistic initiatives independent of official cultural policy. This unparalleled achievement in Hungarian cultural and art history offers opportunities for contemporary innovative approaches thanks to its openness and diversity of genres and approaches.
The thematic focal points of the Performative Archives: Balatonboglár 1970-73 series of events planned for the chapel and its surroundings, and the accompanying documentary selection, were based on the concept of the curators (Gabriella Schuller and László Százados), and were determined by the invited theatre artists and visual artists.

Törvénytelen avantgárd [Illegal Avantgarde]

The Balatonboglár Chapel Studio was a unique experience that reflected the struggle of the artists for the free artistic expression in the Kádár era as well as the manipulations of the officialdom to curb and ultimately suppress these activities. The documents of the involvement of ministerial departments as well as the secret service in the scrutiny and the final ban of the workshop reveal the anatomy of bureaucratized state-socialism and its cultural institutions in action (Éva Forgács)
